INDIA"S GOT TALENT ! - " A Comment OR A Compliment !

INDIA"S GOT TALENT !

A recent report by NASSCOM reveals that more than 75% of the engineers graduating from colleges every year in India are not employable.  This piece of information definitely makes me more than edgy with discomfort….. A recent drive on National Highway 2 (Delhi-Agra) was more than an eye-opener, with more institutes (Engineering, MBA, MCA, Dental, Medical etc etc) on the sides of the road than the trucks being crossed on the roads! With students spilling onto the highway and clustering next to the tea stall at their institutes’ periphery, I could not but help notice the future doctors, engineers etc  of this country soon to take up their ranks at various stratas’ of the society.…..Recent news (Apr 2010), of the Medical Council of India (MCI), chairman being arrested for doling out ‘Recognitions’ to institutes not meeting the basic criterions for considerations in hard cash (the last deal was pegged at 8Cr)… before the CBI caught up!
Ever had a chance to sit back and ponder where our educational system is headed? Or, what is the genesis of this fast catching-up endemic? – My view suggests, that we are where we are because we are only asking for more! If the corporate houses want more ‘employable resources’ at hand, they are equally responsible (if not more, than the educational institutes) to make it possible. Having said this, the Industry-Academia partnership is in my opinion, the only and the most potent way-forward that could result in a win-win proposition for a many-to-many scenario.
Various inclusive models could provide much-sought solutions, for one, the industry could involve itself in the curriculum phase and not only wait for the post-session placement season. As Mahatma Gandhi once said ‘be the change you want to see in the world’, the industry should play inclusive by offering corporate class-room sessions. Business leaders from different functions should take academic sessions for final semester students as an external faculty and not only as guest speakers. It is no surprise that while most of the classroom teachings are relevant in the office environs, the application of knowledge is where most young freshly out of college professionals falter in the early days. The model proposed above, would only ensure early exposure to the corporate way of life and the students could get groomed to walk the talk from earlier on.
Further, while most of the leading organisations have an in-house R&D centre, where tonnes of funds are absorbed, it could be a good idea to start initial research at the academic centres itself! In essence, a reverse modelling of the much-hyped summer internship tradition being earnestly resorted to in the ongoing management curriculums. These students have a much more vibrant and uninhibited campus environ to really stretch their imaginations and with a peer group propel the research activities could lead to some surely startling revelations and out-of-box solutions! This could be a win-win once again, since historical pedagogy’s’ are only historical – it is the live ongoing case studies that would only offer the right simulation.
While the above are just a few thoughts on the industry-academia partnership, I am sure there would be many more path-breaking thoughts/ideations in various stages of fertilisation (would be great to hear from in the comments section below)! Finishing schools which seem to be a rage now-a-days are a good option for last minute brush-ups. In my opinion, the role of these finishing schools should rather be more elaborate than their current scope. The involvement should not only be solely placement-focussed but rather be personality-focussed with the aim of development through the root up approach. Keeping the current scenarios in focus, these infact might be the best possible option as well, suiting and plugging the current gaps in the system.
However, lasting solutions to an industry need can only take existence with a change in perceptions, expectations…and ofcourse…patience.

As a trainer who has experienced all this, I would like to make some contribution through my trainings and use of world class technologies like D C Psychology, N.L.P & Mind Mapping combined with Highly Effective Behavioral Training.
